The AHL Amerks is the breeding ground for future Buffalo Sabres players and now more than ever is it important for them to hone the skills of their young players. Rochester (9-11-1) is currently third in the North Division of the Western Conference, 11 points out of first place. The idea was to have the young Sabre prospects gain some available experience in the AHL and hopefully grow in a playoff run. They need to improve in some areas to get in playoff position.
The leading scorer for Rochester is Phil Varone who is tied for second in the league at 22 points (6 goals, 16 Assists). Varone is followed by Luke Adam with 19 points but both are minus players (-4 for Varone, -8 for Adam). Adam and Mikhail Grigorenko are tied for the team lead with seven goals apiece. The leader in plus-minus for the team is William Carrier who stands at +8, not bad for a player with 5 points. Chad Ruhwedal leads the defense in both scoring (4 goals, 9 assists) and plus-minus (+5). Chad also leads the team in power play goals with 4.

The good thing for the Sabres though is that their best prospects are scoring and have good plus-minus ratings.

Johan Larsson (17 points, +3)
Mikhail Grigorenko (15 points, +1)
Joel Armia (15 points, +5)
Tim Schaller (15 points, +3)
Jake McCabe (7 points, +4)

Only defenseman Mark Pysyk (9 points, -4) is a minus player of the top prospects.

Goaltending has turned into a one man show as prospects go. Andrey Makarov leads the team with a 6-5-1 record, 2.92 goals against average and a .912 save percentage. Those numbers far exceed Nathan Lieuwen’s numbers of 3-6, 3.54 and .882. Matt Hackett, the other goaltender prospect has not played yet while he recovers from his injury.

The Americans next game is scheduled for December 5th at Blue Cross arena. Now is the time for the team to get on a roll and the above players to prove they can lead a team to the playoffs and become future NHL players.
