CAN JOSH ALLEN DELIVER SUPER BOWL IN 2020

CAN JOSH ALLEN DELIVER SUPER BOWL IN 2020

By John Williams

Josh Allen is in his third year as the Buffalo Bills starting quarterback. He's all of 24 years old.

Jim Kelly was 28 when he led the Bills in his third campaign. He turned 31 right after leading Buffalo to their first of four consecutive Super Bowl appearances.

The Bills haven't graced the NFL's grandest stage since. They haven't won a playoff game since 1995 - Kelly's second last season.

Bills fans are very impressed with Allen. After a 3-0 start who wouldn't be? But statistics and comparisons to the immortal Kelly are just that - stats and comparisons.

What Bills Nation wants is a Super Bowl championship it's as simple as that. The sting of an 0-4 mark in the Big Game from the early 1990s still lingers.

After 60 years in the AFL/NFL the Bills are long over due (no disrespect to those Jack Kemp championship teams of the mid-1960s.)

In a city that hosts one of the NHL's most dismal franchises in the Buffalo Sabres, Bills Nation is starved for a Super Bowl win. It begs the question can Josh Allen deliver in 2020?

I SAY "YES" HE CAN!!

Forget about comparisons to HOF quarterback Jim Kelly. Why not compare Allen to the greatest NFL quarterback of all time - Tom Brady? The accomplished Brady was also 24 when he led the Patriots to their first of six Super Bowl triumphs in 2002.

He was also in his second year after apprenticing behind Drew Bledsoe, the face of the Patriots franchise for nine seasons. Allen is in his third year as Bills' starting pivot but had no mentors after a string of Buffalo QBs went by the wayside.

In the 2002 opener in Brady's first full season as a starter, he passed for 294 yards and three touchdowns in a 30–14 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Allen passed for over 300 yards in each of his first three games of 2020 en route to a 3-0 mark. He has 10 passing TDs and two rushing majors in those three games - the first NFL pivot to accomplish the feat. Allen is on pace to throw for at least 50 TDs in 2020. Brady had 28 in 2002.

After starting 3-0 in 2002, the Pats lost their next four games en route to a 9-7 regular season record and no playoff berth. Brady also posted a career-low single-season passer rating of 85.7 and a career-high 14 interceptions. He threw at least one interception in 10 of New England’s 16 games.

Allen has been picked just once - and a controversial pick it was - in the Bills' three consecutive victories.

Okay, the rest they say is history as Brady's six Super Bowl wins in nine attempts are legendary.

And three consecutive Bills' wins in 2020 are not a great body of work in a 16-game schedule. But with Brady now in Tampa Bay, the Bills look poised to win their first AFC East division crown since the mid-1990s (as long as the defence doesn't let them down.)

And just making the playoffs isn't good enough for the Sean McDermott led Bills. After going 0-2 in the post season in McDermott's first three seasons at the helm a Super Bowl appearance is well within reach. And a victory led by Josh Allen a very distinct possibility.
