Making Contact With News Legends

By JOHN WILLIAMS

I was a huge fan of OJ Simpson back in the 1970s. His 1973 triumph of 2003 yards rushing was the stuff hollywood stories are made of.

And while he was never an acclaimed actor, he played his part in the Naked Gun series.

Unfortunately, I lost all admiration for the NFL star in 1994 when he was charged with the slayings of his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ronald Goldman. It was pure luck and manipulation of the jury by his defence team that led to his acquittal in the ciminal court system.

I was riveted by the year plus trial and court proceedings on television. I couldn't watch it enough.

In the spring of 1995, I was also pursuing a writing position with Depuche Publications in the Bahamas. I decided to enhance my chances for employment by prospecting a world class journalist for an interview on the Simpson trial. Someone who Depuche Publications would know.

That journalist was CBC news anchor of the National - PETER MANSBRIDGE. Mr. Mansbridge is a household name in Canada, the US and the Carribean. The Depuche family would be impressed if I could contact someone of Mansbridge's cachete.

I left a message on his voice-mail at the CBC in May of 1995. Sure enough the television legend returned my call later that afternoon. He was very impressed that I had contacted him regarding a possible job in Nassah.

We spoke for 15 minutes about the Simpson trial. Everything from cameras in the courtroom to Kato Kalan. Mr. Mansbridge was very engaging and thorough when answering my questions.

I couldn't have asked for any more of his time, he was that accommodating. We parted quite amiably and he wished me luck.

Later that night, I thought why not make it two in a row? I contacted CTV News around 9:30 - some 90 minutes before their 11 pm. telecast. Sure enough news legend Lloyd Robertson came on the phone and gave me 10 minutes of his time. Like Peter Mansbridge, he was very impressed with my desire to earn in employment in the Bahamas. He answered all my questions on the Simpson trial in great detail.

Both interviews were flawless and did justice to my interviewing skills. The Depuche family were thoroughly impressed with my work although I didn't get the job. It was simply a case of someone having more experience than my self.

Just the same, I scooped two gems and play them from time to time. It was all worth it despite not landing the job.

Later that fall, I was devastated that Simpson was acquitted. I have never witnessed a greater miscarriage of justice.

This is all part of being a sports journalist. You take the good with the tragic and you continue to roll. Or should I say prospect legends like PETER MANSBRIDGE AND LLOYD ROBERTSON.
