Float Like a Butterfly, Sting Like a Bee

Float Like a Butterfly, Sting Like a Bee

Muhammad Ali, the greatest boxer of all-time now has one of thecoolest sports-related pieces of art in the brief history of sports-related art.

While Mixed Martial Arts may be generating the lion's share of the combat sport buzz these days (no, hockey does not count), a work of art like this reminds us that at one time, a single athlete could embody the hopes, dreams, indignation and spirit of an entire group or perhaps an entire nation. I just don't see anyone doing a Brock Lesner tribute out of old WWF (woops WWE) leotards and used tape.

Seeing a piece like this also makes me wonder why there haven't more works of art like this commissioned. Generic players outlined in neon or an oil painting of the 1980 Men's Hockey Team is one thing for your rec room but where are the dynamic, one of a kind, deep-reaching visionary statements that bridge the games we love to the lives we lead?

As I recall, the Albright Knox may still have some money left from their garage sale to bring a new work or two to the Queen City. My vote, Thurman Thomas circa 1994.
