Mets Sign LHP Gustavo Chacin, OF Fernando Perez to Minor League Contracts, Assign to Bisons Roster - Press Release

 July 18, 2011- The New York Mets announced today that they have signed free agent LHP GUSTAVO CHACIN and OF FERNANDO PEREZ to minor league deals. Both players are active for the Bisons game tonight against the Syracuse Chiefs at Alliance Bank Stadium.

To make roster room, RHP JACK EGBERT has been transferred to the Double-A Binghamton Mets. OF FERNANDO MARTINEZ has been placed on the disabled list, retroactive to July 16.

Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks evened their best of seven NBA series finals with a dramatic come from behind 95-93 win over the Miami Heat on the Heat’s home court late Thursday night. Down by 15 points with seven minutes left Nowitzki hit a dramatic three-point jumper with 26.5 seconds left, then won the game with a pretty left-handed drive and finishing layup with the game clock at 2.5 seconds. Playing with a torn tendon injured left hand taped with a splint around his hand he carried the Mav’s to the crucial game 2 victory.

The upcoming MLB draft doesn't have the unanimous first picks like the last 2 years. Strasburg and Harper, last year, were both special talents.
Looking at the broader picture this year, players by geography, California (C), Florida (F) and Texas (T) continue to provide the largest number of projected draftees.

The Hamilton Tiger Cats released the 30-year-old Sandro DeAngelis on Tuesday after he hit a career-low 76.2 per cent of his field goal attempts last season — including just six for 12 beyond 40 yards.
 
DeAngelis was signed as a free agent in February 2010 after five seasons with the Calgary Stampeders. Sandro, a Niagara Falls native, grew up a Ticat fan, but he says the transition proved more difficult than he anticipated.

Harmon Killebrew passed away Tuesday morning at his Scottsdale, Ariz., home. He was 74. Killebrew had been battling esophageal cancer, and he announced last week that his battle was coming to an end. Killebrew died peacefully, with his wife, Nita, and their family at his side.

 

2011 WNY's in Pro Baseball - Story

As we have done over the last couple of yrs, we are listing for 2011 the players in pro baseball who live or played in the WNY area before becoming pros.
This yr we have added players that are playing in Independent Leagues, meaning outside of Major League Baseball and MiLB (minor leagues). Many of these leagues do not ID where a player is from or resides, and many didn't reply to our request for info on players.
