UB Men’s Tennis Team Set to Open Fall Campaign at Binghamton

Posted September 5th, 2014 3:20pm

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team is prepped to open 2014-15 competition at the Binghamton Round Robin Dual Saturday and Sunday.
"We are very excited to get our season started," said head coach Lee Nickell. "It seems like just yesterday we had our hearts ripped out in the MAC finals. We have been training hard with a goal of erasing that memory as fast as possible.
"In addition to returning the top six players from last year's nationally-ranked team, we have added a few vital pieces that will help propel us to a record-breaking season this year."
Nickell returns reigning MAC Player of the Year and All-MAC first-teamer in senior Damien David, as well as classmate and All-MAC Second-Team selection Sebastian Ionescu. They are joined by returning juniors Pablo Alvarez, Sergio Arevalillo and Akhil Mehta and sophomore Jonathan Hannestad. The six combined return 65 singles wins from a year ago.
Noah Hajdu-Andersson and Tony Miller are new to the Bulls' roster this season.
The 2013-14 squad ended their 12-8 season with a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to host Ball State in the MAC Tournament championship match in April. Nickell led the Bulls to the championship round for the third time in his five-year tenure at UB. The squad rallied to upset top-ranked Northern Illinois, 4-2, in the first-round of the tournament to earn a spot in the title match.
