Mets 5, Nationals 2, in only nite game this year. Game notes - Blog

Posted by bob plezia on March 16, 2011 - 12:25am

In 3 of the last 4 games, the Mets hitting seems to have come around. Today Wright was 2 for 2 with a BB. Davis got 2 timely doubles that resulted in RBIs. Getting men on base is important but unless you get hits with runners in scoring position (RISP), its worthless. Its called LOB or left on base. The guy who hits with RISP is priceless.
And if the pitching keeps the runs down, you win. KROD has 5.2 inn with 0.00 ERA this Spring. Now that's closing. Ollie has been perfect in the last few outings when he's come in to get the lefty batter out.

Harvey Dorfman, baseball psychologist, passes - Blog

Posted by Bob Plezia on March 13, 2011 - 7:48pm

One of the outstanding minds and psychologists on the sport of baseball passed away recently.
Harvey Dorfman, born and raised in the Brox in 1935, was an educator, writer, instructor, lecturer and consultant to a number of Major League Baseball clubs. He died Feb. 28.
He was known to be brutally honest and relentless whether you were a rookie or an executive. His questions made you think, as they say today, out of the box.

Mets hitting coming alive with 17 hits and 13 to 3 win over Cards - Blog

Posted by Bob Plezia on March 13, 2011 - 6:51pm

One of the many questions with this yr Mets has been its hitting. Over the last few games, they've had 2 double digit run games. With the Mets 17 hits today, leading the attack, Scott Hairston (OF) had 2 HR showing he is healthy this Spring. He is hitting .407. Thole (C) has been on fire lately getting 2 hits today and is now hitting .448. Pagan had a HR and is now hitting .307.

Mets Win 7 to Astros Something - Blog

Posted by Bob Plezia on March 9, 2011 - 11:00pm

Lazy, hazy day in paradise.
Suddenly looked at my watch. and it read 2:10. 77 degrees, fluffy clouds in the sky moving ever so slowly from right to left.
Hear some low level mumbling. All of a sudden a loud speaker blares "left fielder Jason Bay". Then the rallying sound of a trumpet. Then the loud speaker shouts "first baseman Ike Davis".
What's going on? Where am I?
The mumblings are 3700 low key fans at Digital Domain Park watching the Mets vs the Astros. Two hi level teams battling it out. NOT.

Tigers 2-Mets 1 Pitching Ahead of Hitting - Blog

Posted by Bob Plezia on March 7, 2011 - 10:51pm

Baseball is over 150 yrs old, and the sport has a saying for just about anything, especially for hitting.
"Good pitching beats good hitting." With ave. BA in MLB in the area of .260 for many yrs, it supports that saying, meaning 1 hit for every 4 at bats. Another popular saying is pitching is ahead of hitting in Spring Training (ST). It showed today with the Tigers getting just 7 hits with a BA of .244, and the Mets 5 hits, with a BA of .258. Up to today, the Tigers have a ST BA of.244 and the Mets are hitting .258.

Mets Beat Red Sox on Duda's HR in Eigth - Blog

Posted by Bob Plezia on March 6, 2011 - 6:44pm

This seemed like a ss with 8 All Stars (Ortiz, Pedroia, Youkilis, Gonzalez, Crawford, Cameron, JD Drew, and Varitek) and starting catcher Saltalamachia, not traveling for the Red Sox today. They said they had the flew or was it flue. And if I was a fan who had to pay for a premium price for the tix, I would be ...

Mets use 7 pitchers to shut out Cards (ss) - Blog

Posted by Bob Plezia on March 3, 2011 - 7:09pm

This afternoon the Mets used 7 pitchers to shut out a (ss*) Cards, 3-0.
* Occasionally in Spring Training (ST), a team will split up their squad (split squad or ss). A part of the squad plays one team and other part of the team plays another team. Obviously the starters are split up, usually. This Card team did not have Pujols, Berkman, Y Molina, Rasmus, Schumaker, the first and third base coaches and the hitting coach Mark McGwire.
Ike Davis (inf) had 2 doubles going 2 for 2 and an RBI, and Thole (C) had 2 singles going 2 for 3.

First look at the Mets - Blog

Posted by Bob Plezia on February 25, 2011 - 3:38pm

When the Mets hooked up with the Buffalo Bisons a few yrs.ago as their new AAA affiliate, I was able to see a game in April in Buffalo. Many said it was a AA team playing AAA. But also there was little energy, enthusiasm, passion, and hustle on the field.
As an aside, I emailed a friend in the Cleve org. about the difference. Cleve was the Major Leag team for the Bisons for many yrs, prior.
