As I watched from the sideline Sunday night as the Bills opened their training camp with a night practice, one thought was on the mind of the large, raucous crowd of fans who packed Growney Stadium at St. John Fisher College in Pittsford, New York where the Bills hold their preseason camp. Perhaps, no team in the National Football League this 2014 season faces a more important decision for their franchise going forward then the Buffalo Bills regarding their quarterback EJ Manual. EJ Manual is the great question mark quarterback for this upcoming NFL campaign. His play on the field this season will decide whether the Bills can contend for a playoff spot or for the 15th straight season pack their bags in late December. The Bills have the most talented roster since there last playoff appearance in 1999. First, a running game (No. 1 rushing attempts in the NFL), a solid offensive line which run blocks well for Fred Jackson and CJ Spiller. A group of speedy receivers bolstered by the addition of potentially there best receiver since Andre Reed with the addition of Sammy Watkins. Statistically a top ten defense from last season which under new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz should continue to improve. All of the ingredients are there to capture a playoff spot in the competitive AFC this season. Coach Doug Marrone has committed to opening up the offense and feature a wide-open passing attack. Spreading the field with receivers Robert Woods, Marquise Goodwin, Mike Williams, TJ Graham, and Sammy Watkins the Bills have athleticism and speed to throw more often this year and commit to more of a Denver/New England approach to throwing the football. With two running backs that can catch the ball out of the backfield EJ manual will have plenty of options in the passing game. TE Scott Chandler will catch passes inside the hash marks and needs to continue to improve as a blocker and a receiver. EJ Manual's performance is the key to whether this Bills offense can reach their full potential. He needs to be consistent in his throwing accuracy and pocket management for the entire 16 game season. Can he improve from a mediocre rookie campaign? Can he perform and win under pressure in big games against quality opponents? Will he justify his selection in the 2013 NFL draft as the 16th pick? Simply put, will he become an NFL quarterback, dominating NFL defenses with his arm and become a feared passer in the NFL. Or will he join the Bills graveyard of failed quarterbacks of the last 15 years including Rob Johnson, JP Losman, Trent Edwards, Brian Fitzpatrick and the host of less than quality backup quarterbacks who have played in Orchard Park. The long-suffering Buffalo Bills fans have their fingers crossed and hope prayers will be answered. No other franchise in the National Football League has currently had a playoff drought lasting as long as the Bills. General manager Doug Whaley has said that the Bills are going all out this season to secure a playoff spot. Nothing less than a playoff game in December/January will be considered a success for this team this season. The eyes of Western New York football fans are squarely upon the 2014 edition of the Buffalo Bills. It's time to put up or shut up. Or will the Bills be looking for another franchise quarterback in 2015?
