EJ Manel Was On Target This Week In Practices With Steelers

The Buffalo Bills and Pittsburgh Steelers held two days of joint practices, Wednesday and Thursday this week at St. Vincent College, which hosts the Steelers' training camp. Those practices were in preparation for a preseason game between the two teams, Saturday night, 7:30 PM at Heinz Field. Preseason games are a mixed bag. The emphasis on winning is secondary, although the Bills under Coach Marrone for this preseason clearly want to win. With a second-year quarterback EJ Manuel, Marrone wants his quarterback and the team to develop the confidence that they can win whether it’s preseason or regular-season. During the two practices against the Steelers quarterback EJ Manuel was very sharp throwing the football. He completed over 60% of his throws and was more confident throwing the ball downfield against the Steeler defense. Manuel completed 17-of-23 passes Thursday night showing poise along with quick, decisive decisions in finding his receivers and getting off primary targets. He may have taken a big step in his maturation process as a quarterback, something the Bills coaching staff was excited to see. Bills coach Doug Marrone noted that in Wednesday’s practice in Latrobe, PA., where the two day sessions against the Steeler’s were held, Manuel was accurate and consistent. Wide receiver Mike Williams, in a Buffalo News report, said he told Manuel that Thursday night was “the best I’ve ever seen him.” I told EJ – to be honest my exact words were – this is the best I’ve ever seen him,” Williams said after Thursday night’s practice. “I don’t think he threw an incomplete pass. Everything was on time. “We got everything we wanted. It was perfect.” Positive signs for the quarterback and the Bills offense. Good performances in practice are one thing. Now EJ has to take the progress he is shown in practice this week against the Steelers and turn it into a solid performance in Saturday night’s game against the same Steelers defense. This is the third preseason game for the Bills and the starters should see between three and four series of action.
