Showdown set for Class A South title

As the high school football season approaches its conclusion a showdown is set for week seven. The Class A South division title will be on the line as undefeated Williamsville South will host rival Amherst. The game Friday will not only determine first place in the division but it will also determine momentum as the teams head into the playoffs.

Williamsville South will enter the game 6-0(5-0 in league play) looking to end their regular season with a perfect record. The Billies have run through their schedule with relative ease, outscoring its opponents by a margin of 189-62. Will South is led by junior quarterback Trent Ferguson. Ferguson has thrown for 11 touchdowns this season and has also run for six scores. Ferguson is a big quarterback at 6-foot-3, 195 pounds which makes him a dual threat to opposing defenses. Nothing was more evident in the Billies week six win over cross town foe Williamsville East when Ferguson ran for four touchdowns. The Billies went on to win the game by a score of 34-14. The Billies are currently ranked fifth in The News large school poll but are most likely headed up a spot or two after their recent win.

Amherst will enter the showdown with a record of 5-1(4-1 in league play) looking to pull of the upset. Amherst is coming off an impressive week six win over Williamsville North. In the 35-0 home victory for the Tigers, junior quarterback Justin Twarog completed 13 of 17 passes for 167 yards and two scores. Both touchdowns were caught by senior Brandon Borden. A big part of Amherst’s offense is senior running back Justin Burke. Burke leads the Tigers in rushing with 384 yards and four touchdowns on just 60 carries. His 6.4 yards per carry average makes him a key point of opponent’s game plans. Quarterback Justin Twarog likes to throw the ball to his two favorite targets in Brandon Borden and Glenn Belton. The two receivers have combined for 31 catches for 459 yards and 5 touchdowns.

The two teams met last year in a week three matchup of undefeated teams and Williamsville South dominated the game and went on to a 45-8 victory. The tigers hope to have better luck this time around versus the Billies. The game will be Friday at 7:00pm in Williamsville. I will provide full game recap and analysis following this huge Class A South battle. Enjoy the game!
