Will South rallies to Class A South title

Williamsville South hosted Amherst Friday night with the Class A South title on the line. The Billies of Williamsville entered the game with a perfect 6-0 record while Amherst came into the contest with a record of 5-1. These two cross town rivals had a lot to play for in this very damp and windy Friday night clash. The bleachers were packed with many Billie fans who wanted to see their team complete the undefeated regular season.
Amherst kicked off the scoring in the first quarter when quarterback Justin Twarog ran down a bad snap and recovered it to find Glenn Belton for a 34-yard touchdown pass to give the Tigers the 7-0 lead. Will South responded quickly when junior quarterback Trent Ferguson ran in his seventh touchdown of the season. It was a 9-yard scamper for Ferguson that tied the game up at 7-7. Amherst regained the lead late in the second quarter when senior running back Justin Burke put the Tigers ahead with a 15-yard touchdown run. Amherst led at the half by a score of 14-7.
On the second play from scrimmage in the third quarter the game took an unexpected turn of events. Ferguson faked a handoff and started running up the middle and was hit hard by Cole Babatunde. Ferguson was slow to get up and needed assistance walking off the field. He did not return in the game after this play. Tyler Piasecki replaced Ferguson at quarterback and led the Billies on a scoring drive. Luke Falzone ended the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. After Amherst quarterback Justin Twarog threw an interception midway through the third quarter the Billies took control of the game.
Falzone added two more rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter as the Billies outscored the Tigers 16-8 in the quarter. Twarog threw his second touchdown pass of the game late in the fourth quarter when he connected with Brandon Borden on a 35-yard touchdown pass.
The Billies went on to win the game by a score of 30-22. The win gives Williamsville South first place in Class A South and secures their perfect regular season. Amherst will play either Sweet Home or North Tonawanda in next week’s Section VI Class A Quarterfinals. Williamsville South will play host to either Starpoint or McKinley.
