Preseason Opener....Panthers 25 - Bills 24
Paul "Mr. NFL" Adamo
Friday night the 2015 Bills preseason officially kicked off at Ralph Wilson Stadium with the Carolina Panthers scoring a last minute touchdown when Joe Webb threw a 42-yard pass to Brandon Wegher, then found Paul Browning for the winning two point conversion and a 25-24 Panther victory.
The outcome was not really significant, actually secondary for the Bills, as the continuing three way quarterback battle for the starting position was front and center for fans to watch, critique and analyze.
As he competes for the starting quarterback position in Bill's camp Matt Cassel has already fashioned one of the most unusual and unique career's in NFL history. As an answer to a trivia question that most Bill's and NFL fans would have a hard time answering unless they googled it.........Who is the only quarterback in the history of the NFL to start an NFL game at quarterback without ever starting a game in college? Answer: Matt Cassel.
Paul “Mr. NFL” Adamo
Camp officially opened with a 10 AM practice this morning and Coach Rex Ryan and his optimistic Buffalo Bills were welcomed with a large crowd of enthusiastic fans. An estimated 2,000 plus travelled to St. John Fisher College in Pittsford to get their first look at the new coach and his large ‘media persona’ which makes Ryan a fan favorite and a sought after interview. The attendance was one of the largest opening camp crowds in 10 years.

Q: Opening Comments
After yesterday's 23 -17 loss to the Houston Texans at Reliant Stadium the Buffalo Bills can no longer avoid the obvious staring at them from their quarterback position. Quarterback EJ Manuel is not a starting quarterback in the National Football League and would even struggle as a backup in the league. The Bills have lost the last two games, games they could have won had they had adequate quarterback play. It's not the interceptions late in the game or even the continued mental mistakes with timeouts, two minute drills, pocket awareness i.e.
67,000 very loud Seattle fans celebrated the reigning Super Bowl champions as they unfurled the championship banner at midfield in a ceremony before the game. Ignoring NFL critics that point to the fact that no Super Bowl champion has repeated since the 2003, 2004 New England Patriots the Seattle Seahawks opened the NFL season and defense of their Super Bowl championship with a dominating 36 -16 route of the Green Bay Packers. The Seahawks demonstrating the most balanced team in the NFL offensively and defensively led at halftime 17 -10, then dominated the second half scoring 19 points.
Thursday because of weather considerations the Bills held a closed practice and fans were not able to see them at St. John Fisher College one last time. The Bills closed camp as they prepare for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at home Saturday at 7:30 PM. The Bills this preseason had the longest camp of any of the 32 NFL teams. They started with an evening practice Sunday, July 20 and will end their camp in Pittsford, August 21.
The Buffalo Bills and Pittsburgh Steelers held two days of joint practices, Wednesday and Thursday this week at St. Vincent College, which hosts the Steelers' training camp. Those practices were in preparation for a preseason game between the two teams, Saturday night, 7:30 PM at Heinz Field. Preseason games are a mixed bag. The emphasis on winning is secondary, although the Bills under Coach Marrone for this preseason clearly want to win.
The NY Jets training camp is just a short 90 miles southeast of the Buffalo Bills camp, in Cortland, NY at the SUNY Cortland campus. The Jets this season had upgraded their team with many new key additions to the quarterback and receiver position and their overall roster depth. The two quarterbacks for the Jets, Geno Smith and Michael Vick, looked in mid-season form when I visited their camp in August twice, as they completed passes with precise accuracy and without many balls hitting the ground. Both displayed excellent foot work, throwing technique and pocket awareness.
