WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - May 11 - Sophomore Brian Barry (Derby, N.Y./Lake Shore) doubled, homered and drove in three runs while freshman pitcher Michael Schnurr (Waterloo, Ont./St. David's) improved to 8-0 as the Erie Community College baseball team picked up a 7-3 win over Hudson Valley CC Saturday afternoon in the opening round of the Region III Tournament. Game two of the best-of-three series is yet to be played at the ECC north campus diamond.
Barry hit a two-out home run in the fifth inning to tie the score. Sophomore Ricky Mendiola (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) doubled and scored on a double by Nick Manoukarakis (Toronto, Ont./Birchmount Park). Tyler Hoffhines (Depew, N.Y./Lancaster) singled to drive in Manoukarakis.
Hudson Valley CC added a run in the sixth before the Kats plated two runs in their half of the inning. Following a double by Marc Dileo (Williamsville, N.Y./Canisius), Nick Caboot (Derby, N.Y./Lake Shore) singled to drive in Dileo. Vinny Sherman (North Collins, N.Y./North Collins) then doubled to drive in Caboot for a 5-2 ECC lead.
Barry then added a two-out, two-run double in the eighth inning. He leads the NJCAA Division III with a school-record 67 RBI. Barry's double was his 21st which also lead NJCAA Division III.
ECC is now 36-18.
