Section V Makes a Big Impact in the State High School Basketball Tournament - Blog

The college basketball tournament is not the only tournament that is going on this time of year. High school basketball players are trying to achieve their season long goal of winning a state title and 2 of Section V’s teams fulfilled their dreams. Elba (25-0) which has been so dominant all year long (winning all but one game this season by double digits) found itself in unfamiliar territory, trailing 23-22 at halftime in the state final vs Argyle Scots (22-3).

For Willie “Hutch” Jones, Burgard High school’s gym teacher, the road from there to here is much different than any other high school gym teacher; but how many are former Lakers?
It all started for Jones growing up sitting on his parents’ bed watching NBA games on television. With his homemade rim, a hanger on top of a door and glove as his basketball, his journey begins.
In high school the 5’8” freshman became a 6’6” senior.
