Sabres get it right with "Alumni Plaza" - Blog

Posted by StrawMR on July 12, 2012 - 1:25pm

The fans spoke and the Buffalo Sabres have listened - the organization is building a statue of the famed French Connection line outside First Niagara Center.  It's a tribute that has been a long time coming.
Sabres President Ted Black announced the plans for the bronze statue at a press conference this afternoon.

"This was one of the most requested items in our fan suggestion box that we opened up last year," said Black.

He's not the best player on the ice, but Frederick Roy does come from the best roots.

Roy is the son of NHL legend and hockey Hall of Famer Patrick Roy, arguably the greatest goaltender of all time. He knows how much his name means in hockey.

"It's followed me my whole life," said about living up to the name Roy. "I mean, I'm proud of what my father did accomplish in his career. For me, he's a role model. I try to bring the same kind of aspect to my game."

Hodgson embracing time in Buffalo - Blog

Posted by Michael Straw on July 9, 2012 - 10:41pm

It was a bit of a whirlwind time for Sabres center Cody Hodgson last Spring.
He went from being on a top team in Vancouver to a team fighting just to make the postseason. He was acquired in the middle of a long road trip which required an unusually excessive amount of travel; he had to fly from Vancouver to Buffalo to California.
He was also inserted right into the top line for the Sabres and was immediately expected to help spark a team that was desperate for offense.

It's time for the NHL to end long-term contracts - Blog

Posted by Michael Straw on July 3, 2012 - 6:28pm

July 1 is viewed by many as the best day of the hockey year.
It's the beginning of free agency. You know, that time when teams are awarded the Stanley Cup based on the money they've spent to bring in, and likely overpay, players. However, this year was much different. On a day dubbed "Free Agent Frenzy", July 1 was more lull and dull than any other in recent history.

The NHL Awards needs a bit of a revamp - Blog

Posted by Michael Straw on June 20, 2012 - 6:43pm

On Wednesday night the 2012 NHL awards took place, and while I was watching them I realized how stale the awards show has become.
Before traditionalists come after me for bashing the classic awards like the Hart, Norris, Jack Adams, I want to let you know that that's not what I'm doing with this post. I'm not suggesting we take away anything, I want to add.
If the NHL is going to put on a two-hour award show, then why not add some fun awards to the mix that fans can vote for.

Prospect Breakdown: Branden Gaunce - Blog

Posted by Michael Straw on June 11, 2012 - 11:10pm

Brendan Gaunce has all the makings of an elite NHL prospect. The top offensive player for the Belleville Bulls, Gaunce is a big-bodied, powerful center who knows how to put the puck in the net. He has excellent vision on the ice and his skating ability is better than most of the “big men” available in this year’s draft. He also has a cannon of a shot.

Prospect Breakdown: Radek Faksa - Blog

Posted by Michael Straw on June 7, 2012 - 4:55pm

The NHL Draft is fast approaching and the Buffalo Sabres have a plethora of picks, including two in the first round. A player that the Sabres could very well be targeting is Kitchener Ranger center Radek Faksa.
Born in Opava, Czech Republic, Faksa came over to the Rangers by way of the 2011 CHL Import Draft and had an immediate impact with the Rangers. So much so that head coach Steve Spott considers Faksa another Gabriel Landeskog. That’s high praise for a guy who’s only been in the league for one season.
