Preseason Opener....Panthers 25 - Bills 24 Paul "Mr. NFL" Adamo Friday night the 2015 Bills preseason officially kicked off at Ralph Wilson Stadium with the Carolina Panthers scoring a last minute touchdown when Joe Webb threw a 42-yard pass to Brandon Wegher, then found Paul Browning for the winning two point conversion and a 25-24 Panther victory. The outcome was not really significant, actually secondary for the Bills, as the continuing three way quarterback battle for the starting position was front and center for fans to watch, critique and analyze.
As he competes for the starting quarterback position in Bill's camp Matt Cassel has already fashioned one of the most unusual and unique career's in NFL history. As an answer to a trivia question that most Bill's and NFL fans would have a hard time answering unless they googled it.........Who is the only quarterback in the history of the NFL to start an NFL game at quarterback without ever starting a game in college? Answer: Matt Cassel.
Paul “Mr. NFL” Adamo Camp officially opened with a 10 AM practice this morning and Coach Rex Ryan and his optimistic Buffalo Bills were welcomed with a large crowd of enthusiastic fans. An estimated 2,000 plus travelled to St. John Fisher College in Pittsford to get their first look at the new coach and his large ‘media persona’ which makes Ryan a fan favorite and a sought after interview. The attendance was one of the largest opening camp crowds in 10 years.
A highly intelligent man hailing from Charlotte, NC where he played QB at Howard University should be the Bills next head coach. Pep Hamilton being an ex QB helps him articulate to his QB’s what he wants them to do on the field and he understands what the QB is seeing out on the field from opposing defenses. At just 40 years old he is young enough to vibe with his players and at this point in his career has the cache to have guys respect him. Hamilton has worked with Andrew Luck at Stanford and now with the Indianapolis Colts. Luck paired with Hamilton has brought the Colts success rapidly. The Colts have been to three straight playoff appearances including two division titles in 2013 and 2014. Luck has the most passing yards for a quarterback through his first 4 postseason games (1,438 yards). Hamilton has had tremendous success developing Indy’s passing attack led by Luck. Working with a young QB that has the physical tools like EJ Manuel would astronomically improve Manuel if he was learning to play QB from an ex QB. If the Bills believe in Manuel, they need to bring in a guru who has had success working with a young QB. The defense is in place and already is a playoff caliber D. The offense has weapons and just needs a QB who would not get in the way of the Bills potential success. Bringing in Hamilton would give the Bills the offensive lift they need. He should be the Bills next head coach. If the Bills were to bring in someone besides Pep Hamilton it should be tough talking Rex Ryan. He would bring the clout the Bills have been lacking. Ryan’s bravado will get the Bills relevant again on a national scene and even though that doesn’t bring you any wins or loses, relevance is important with the Bills. Most people outside of western NY consider the Bills an afterthought franchise. Me living in Charlotte all I hear when I bring up the Bills is “when are they moving to Toronto?” With the character that is Rex Ryan, I guarantee people will know about Buffalo next year hopefully by their play but definitely by Ryan’s mouth. The Bills already have an all-pro 3-4 readymade defense and no matter what you say about Ryan, the man knows defensive football. To be the best you have to beat the best. No one frustrates Tom Brady like Rex Ryan. Back when Ryan was the defensive coordinator of the Ravens he used to make Brady and Co. earn every yard they got. The Jets won some games vs New England and always played them tough under Ryan. If Ryan gets hired he would need to bring in an established offensive coordinator. My choice would be Marc Trestman! Wishful thinking would say the Bills would be able to pull Hamilton from the Colts and add him as the OC under Ryan. That would be a heck of a transaction if that happened but I know Christmas has already come and gone. But miracles happen every day! We will see what transpires.
Second-year head softball coach Trena Peel has announced the addition of seven players for next year's 2015-16 season that have all signed National Letters of Intent. "I am ecstatic about this recruiting class that my staff and I were able to put together," said Peel. "We not only found talented athletes, we found great people with very supportive parents. These seven players are eager to get here and earn an opportunity to be instant game changers. I believe that they will put us in a position to compete for a championship every year."
Stevens is back for a treat on Halloween By Mark Patrick Harzynski Sr
After yesterday's 23 -17 loss to the Houston Texans at Reliant Stadium the Buffalo Bills can no longer avoid the obvious staring at them from their quarterback position. Quarterback EJ Manuel is not a starting quarterback in the National Football League and would even struggle as a backup in the league. The Bills have lost the last two games, games they could have won had they had adequate quarterback play. It's not the interceptions late in the game or even the continued mental mistakes with timeouts, two minute drills, pocket awareness i.e.
67,000 very loud Seattle fans celebrated the reigning Super Bowl champions as they unfurled the championship banner at midfield in a ceremony before the game. Ignoring NFL critics that point to the fact that no Super Bowl champion has repeated since the 2003, 2004 New England Patriots the Seattle Seahawks opened the NFL season and defense of their Super Bowl championship with a dominating 36 -16 route of the Green Bay Packers. The Seahawks demonstrating the most balanced team in the NFL offensively and defensively led at halftime 17 -10, then dominated the second half scoring 19 points.
Last Saturday afternoon (8/23/14) a nine bout amateur card was sponsored by Pretty Girl Promotions at the Armory in Rochester, NY. a few hours before their professional show at the same venue. Clubs from Buffalo, Rochester and Utica participated.  University at Buffalo football head coach Jeff Quinn has announced his initial signees for the 2014 recruiting class on the first day of the National Signing Period. The 21-member class is Quinn's largest in his five years at Buffalo.
Thursday because of weather considerations the Bills held a closed practice and fans were not able to see them at St. John Fisher College one last time. The Bills closed camp as they prepare for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at home Saturday at 7:30 PM. The Bills this preseason had the longest camp of any of the 32 NFL teams. They started with an evening practice Sunday, July 20 and will end their camp in Pittsford, August 21.
The Buffalo Bills and Pittsburgh Steelers held two days of joint practices, Wednesday and Thursday this week at St. Vincent College, which hosts the Steelers' training camp. Those practices were in preparation for a preseason game between the two teams, Saturday night, 7:30 PM at Heinz Field. Preseason games are a mixed bag. The emphasis on winning is secondary, although the Bills under Coach Marrone for this preseason clearly want to win.
The NY Jets training camp is just a short 90 miles southeast of the Buffalo Bills camp, in Cortland, NY at the SUNY Cortland campus. The Jets this season had upgraded their team with many new key additions to the quarterback and receiver position and their overall roster depth. The two quarterbacks for the Jets, Geno Smith and Michael Vick, looked in mid-season form when I visited their camp in August twice, as they completed passes with precise accuracy and without many balls hitting the ground. Both displayed excellent foot work, throwing technique and pocket awareness.
Watching Sammy Watkins run routes and go through drills during the Buffalo Bills camp practices any football fan can appreciate the raw, athletic talent of this rookie receiver from Clemson University. In the first two weeks of camp he has become the most talked about player, other than quarterback EJ Manual. He attracts attention whenever he steps on the field. He has demonstrated to the Bills fans and media that he possesses that intangible “Star” quality that comes along very infrequently in the NFL.
As I watched from the sideline Sunday night as the Bills opened their training camp with a night practice, one thought was on the mind of the large, raucous crowd of fans who packed Growney Stadium at St. John Fisher College in Pittsford, New York where the Bills hold their preseason camp. Perhaps, no team in the National Football League this 2014 season faces a more important decision for their franchise going forward then the Buffalo Bills regarding their quarterback EJ Manual. EJ Manual is the great question mark quarterback for this upcoming NFL campaign.
The St. John International Boxing Program in Buffalo held an 11-bout card on July 19th. Darryl Graham put together a very competitive show featuring gyms from Dunkirk, Rochester, Canada, Syracuse, two gyms from Erie, PA and the Buffalo area. Destyn Hopkins and Norberto Lopez put on an exciting 125 lb battle that was voted fight of the night. There were more than one contest that had votes because of the desire and dedication of the boxers involved. There was no trophy for Fighter of the Night but Elan DeJesus, Anthony Diaz, Edgar Medera and Anthony Woodruff would have been in the running. Elan DeJesus (Dunkirk) dec 2-1 Joe Reed (Flare Center) Tim Akerobulou (U.B.) dec 3-0 Curtis Fisher (Faith & Hope) Tatyanna Feliciano (Erie) dec 3-0 Mary Shaneyshak (Baden St.) Anthony Diaz (Goomba's) dec 3-0 Masi Said (Clancy's) Mark Staples (Eastside Buffalo) dec 2-1 Zalquon Anthony (Baden St.) Edgar Medera (Future) dec 3-0 Gordon Kirkland (Erie) Shamar Lutchman (Faith & Hope) dec 3-0 Mario Jamie (Eastside Erie) Tyrell Harris (Erie) dec 2-1 Alex Dedovets (Goomba's) Anthony Woodruff (Westside) dec 2-1 Donte Ettipio (Victory) Devin Williams (Erie) dec 3-0 Donnie Marshall ( Bflo. One of my favorite nights of the year is upon. The NBA 2014 Draft is about to commence! Who will go #1 overall? Where will Joel Embiid now go after his latest injury? Who will take a chance on the kid from down under Dante Exum? Where will PJ Hairston go after starring at UNC 2 years ago then being kicked out of school and forced to play in the D-League this year? Will that professional experience help or hurt his case? How far does the potential #1 pick of last year’s NBA Draft, Marcus Smart fall?
